New Distict Executive For Henry Shelor District

My Name is Joshua Hanes. I am happy to be coming to the Pee Dee Area Council to be the New District Executive for Henry Shelor District. I am moving to the Sumter area from Cornelia, Georgia. I am a only child and have grown up in Scouting.

I started off as a Tiger Cub and worked my way up to Webelos where I earned my Arrow of Light. I continued into Boy Scouts and attained the rank of Eagle with several Palms. I am a Vigil Honor member of the Order of the Arrow, Scouting National Honor Society.

I went to Young Harris College where I granduated with an Associate s Degree in science with a concentration in chemistry.  I further my education by going to Auburn University. I recently graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering.

Scouting has allowed me to do things I enjoy such as camping, hiking and sailing.  Some of my other interest are reading books, watching movies, television and playing games.  I am looking forward to meeting the people of the Henry Shelor District and the rest of the people in the Pee Dee Area Council. I am blessed to be able to do something I love and believe in. I look forward to working with you all.

  • About Henry Shelor District

The Henry Shelor District comprises the Sumter, Clarendon, and Lee Counties of South Carolina. With over 450 youth and 300 volunteers, the Henry Shelor District is always finding new ways to build a fun and educational Scouting program for all youth. We hold five to six yearly events that average at least 50 youth, such as Boy Scout Camporee and Cub Scout Day Camp. We also reach every school within the three counties, and average over 200 youth recruited within a year!

Scouting in the area began in 1914 at Wedgefield Presbyterian Church by Pastor John R. Hay. Wendell M. Levi, who consequently also authored the Pigeon Raising Merit Badge Pamphlet, started the first Sumter Troop, though it was unregistered. In 1916, John Craig Hurst formed the first registered Troop at the YMCA with over 50 boys active. Soon three Troops existed, lead by Perry Moses (Troop 1), Rev. Karl Kinard (Troop 2), and Charles Cuttino (Troop 3). Though the Pee Dee Area Council was started in 1928, it wasn't for another ten years that the Sumter District joined with Frank Clarke becoming the first District Chairman. In 1970, the District was renamed Henry Shelor after one of Wendell Levi's Troop 1 first Scouts. According to legendary Scoutmaster Wilbert Bernshouse, "Henry maintained an active interest in the Boy Scouts all of his life, and made many valuable contributions to the organization."

In the Henry Shelor District, we have a large group of wonderful volunteers who are highly active and enthusiastic to be involved in the Scouting Program. Key Volunteers in the district are:

District Chairman:                                       Glenn Button

District Commissioner:                           Bill Robinson

We meet at 7:00 p.m. every First Tuesday at the American Legion Scout Hut off 28 S. Artillery Road in Sumter. Anyone in Scouting is invited, and this is a good chance to meet other leaders, get upcoming information on dates, and compare ideas. The meeting usually last an hour with training and information specific to Cub Scouts or Boy Scouts following. For more information please contact

Joshua Hanes at 706-768-2385 or email johanes@bsamail.org

Remember it's never too late to sign up!
